Vivian Jarrett

It has been a privileged journey in my role as a psychologist and Director of our clinics Vision and M1 Psychology. In 2006 after completing my honours in psychology at Griffith University I embarked on a journey to full registration through the 4+2 internship program.  I worked in two very different settings being a research assistant for Prof Halford on his Couple Care for parents project, and as a psychologist at The Park Centre for Mental Health. It was working in my role with the research team at the university that I gained a love for research and started my PhD in the social psychology of Mental Illness.  While working with the dedicated team at Queensland Health I gained insight into working with very complex and severe mental health conditions. Prior to this I’ve published a few journal articles, presented at many conferences at home and abroad on the topics of mental health, training counsellors, social discrimination and trauma. I’ve also been an expert panel member training psychiatric registrars at the PA hospital.

In 2008 I gained full registration and commenced a part-time private practice at Mt Gravatt and working as a project manager and clinical supervisor on a NHMRC grant in the school of Nursing and Midwifery. The project evaluated effective treatments for child birth trauma.  I loved the diversity of working in different clinical treatment areas, in multi-disciplinary teams and within business at my practice.  Over time my solo Mt Gravatt practice gave birth to Vision Psychology in 2010 when many of my colleagues started working with me and the size of our premises expanded to support 8 psychologists.

In 2011 I completed the NHMRC project and was named on the next NHMRC grant into reducing fear of birth and cesarean section.  At this stage my business had expanded rapidly and I redirected my efforts to developing my business model and let go of my PhD and research commitments. I opened a new clinic called M1 Psychology at Loganholme in 2014. The business now has approximately 20 staff, 60 psychologists, social workers and occasionally psychiatrists. The goal for the future will be to include many other allied health professionals and provide streamlined, effective and efficiently run services for the community.

Brisbane Psychologist Vivian JarrettIn 2014 I decided to consolidate my wealth of knowledge on business and I will soon complete my Postgraduate Certificate in Research Commercialisation at UQ. With 80 staff at our premises providing services to thousands of families we are about to make changes to mental health, by changing how business can bring the best of psychology to the consumer. The business model works through supporting our brilliant team of psychologists with advice to commercialise and bring their intellectual property to the market.  Most research takes 10-20 years of hard work before the public can take advantage of cutting edge advances in treatment. Our business model has a lot in common with Uber in that we aim to create a process of rapid dissemination of information that can help the community. Our clinicians with a wealth of knowledge can commence practice and the community can see when they are available through our innovative use of online booking and what is available through accessing our websites which are loaded with self-help information.

We hope to provide you and your community with free knowledge gained through our 6-10 years of academic study.  The wealth of knowledge gained by each psychologist has value to you, but only if you can access it.  The Vision of our business is to provide that access to quality mental health services by expanding our business model to meet the community demands.

Below I’ve created a list of my favourite areas of clinical and business practice:

  • Business Coaching and Start Ups: Given the rise and expansion of my psychology business, I’m available to share that knowledge for individuals or families to access assistance to manage conflict, in expanding their markets, trialling new services.  I can visit on site and provide recommendations to improve efficiency and interpersonal/business effectiveness of owners. While this information on how I’ve expanded my business to be largest psychology practice in Queensland is not available online, it is available to business owners who I coach.
  • Psychotherapy Supervision: Health professionals such as psychologists, social workers, nurses, psychiatrists and GPs occasionally need supervision around providing counselling.  I have many years experience in coaching professionals across a diverse range of treatment and counselling frameworks.
  • Physical and Sexual Trauma: Enhancing self-care and resilience, discussing the events that caused distress, and emotional processing of negative emotions from the events.
  • Medical/Operative trauma: Exploration of emotional care during medical or operative procedures that were invasive and life threatening.
  • Major Depression: interpersonal or cognitive strategies to overcome the negative emotions and relationship issues commonly found in people with depression.
  • Pregnancy Counselling: Counselling may include the discussion of transition to parenthood and medical interventions during pre and postnatal care, models of birthing support and decisions regarding the pregnancy.
  • Parenting Support:  Parents need extra support for stressful times when relationships are strained, children are challenging, or to ease the transition to the new parenting role.
  • Postnatal Depression: Affects 16% of women during the first year after the birth, and most women have depression during pregnancy.  Anxiety plays a major role in the development of the infant’s emotions, as well as the mother’s ability to endure the demands of parenting a newborn.
  • Couples Counselling: Couples needing support around decisions about the future of their relationship, enhancing intimacy, and problem solving for unresolved conflict.
  • Sex Therapy: Discussions around the causes of sexual dysfunction, low desire, mutual satisfaction in the sexual relationship for all types of adult relationships.
